Crane Rail Types Available for India Market
In addition to IS 3443 rails, crane rails of other standards are also used in the Indian market.

What is Indian Standard Crane Rail
IS 3443 Crane Rail, also referred to as CR Series Rail (Indian Standard Crane Rail), is a crane rail manufactured in accordance with Indian crane rail standards and widely used in ports, steel mills, warehouses, and heavy industrial facilities.
Feature: Compared to standard rails, CR80 rail features a wider head, a thicker web, and a wider base, enabling it to withstand higher wheel pressures, impact loads, and lateral forces; it is particularly well-suited for heavy-duty, low-speed hoisting equipment subject to frequent starting and stopping.
DIN 536 Crane Rail
The DIN 536 crane rail is also widely used in India. This is due to the extensive adoption of German equipment for projects involving German-invested companies, and the widespread use of European designs for port machinery and automated warehousing systems. Such as container cranes, gantry cranes, automated storage cranes, steel mill cranes, etc.
| DIN 536 | Approx. Weight |
| A45 | 22.1 kg/m |
| A55 | 31.8 kg/m |
| A65 | 43.1 kg/m |
| A75 | 56.2 kg/m |
| A100 | 74.3 kg/m |
| A120 | 100 kg/m |
| A150 | 150.3 kg/m |
QU Series Crane Rail
QU Series crane rails are mostly used in EPC projects offered by China, or for imported equipment. For some of the QU crane rail models can be used to replace CR crane rails; QU series crane rails and CR crane rails are competing in the Indian market, for example the CR80 rail and QU80 rail, CR100 rail and QU100 rail, CR120 rail and QU120 rail.
| QU Model | Weight |
| QU70 | 52.8 kg/m |
| QU80 | 63.7 kg/m |
| QU100 | 88.96 kg/m |
| QU120 | 118.1 kg/m |
ASTM / ASCE Crane Rail
ASCE crane rails are adopted by some multinational companies in India and by U.S. design projects. The related applications include US technology transfer projects, petrochemical plants, large-scale industrial facilities
| Standard | Type |
| ASTM A759 | Crane Rail Specification |
| ASCE 40 | Light Crane Rail |
| ASCE 60 | Medium Crane Rail |
| ASCE 80 | Heavy Crane Rail |
| ASCE 100 | Heavy Crane Rail |
How to Select the Right Crane Rail for Your Project?
The customer shall select the right crane rail based on many factors, such as the crane capacity, wheel load, and rail compatibility. These crane models can be used for light-duty, medium-duty and heavy-duty crane capacities. Here is the basic guide of choosing the CR series crane rail models:

- CR50 rail is mostly used for light-duty overhead cranes and workshops.
- CR60 rail features a larger cross-section and superior bending resistance, making it one of the most common crane rails used in factory crane runways.
- CR80 rail is one of the most widely used heavy-duty crane rails for industrial and port applications; featuring a wide rail head and excellent wear resistance, it can withstand high wheel pressures and impact loads.
- CR100 rail features an enlarged rail head and base, making it suitable for crane applications in large-scale industrial facilities, such as large port terminals, automated container terminals, and continuous casting workshops.
- CR120 rail is one of the ultra-heavy-duty specifications in the CR series; it features exceptional sectional rigidity and wear resistance, making it suitable for extreme operating conditions, such as ultra-large port cranes, mining loading and unloading equipment, large-scale steel plants, etc.
When using crane rails of other standards, the customer shall consider the compatibility of crane wheel flange, rail clamp and base plate. If you have no idea how to choose the crane rail model, feel free to contact us now!
FAQ of Indian Standard Crane Rails
-
1. What is IS 3443 crane rail?
IS 3443 crane rail is the Indian Standard (IS 3443:1980) that specifies dimensions, material properties, and performance requirements for crane rail sections used in industrial applications -
2. What is the difference between CR80 and QU80 crane rail?
CR80 follows the IS3443 standard, while QU80 follows the Chinese GB standard. They have different dimensions, profiles, and weights. CR80 is commonly used in India and Southeast Asia, whereas QU80 is used in China. -
3. Is CR100 suitable for container cranes?
Yes, CR100 is suitable for container cranes. It is designed for heavy-duty applications, including port container systems, shipyard cranes, and container terminals, providing stability under heavy loads. -
4. What is the difference between crane rail and railway rail?
Crane rails are designed for industrial cranes with concentrated point loads and frequent starts/stops, while railway rails are for high-speed trains over long distances. Crane rails have a wider head, thicker web, and stockier profile compared to railway rails. -
5. Which crane rail is commonly used in Indian ports?
ISCR rails (as per IS 3443) are commonly used in Indian ports. CR100 and other heavy JIS standard rails are also used for port gantry cranes. Modern ports increasingly use Rail-Mounted Gantry (RMG) and Cantilever Rail-Mounted Gantry (CRMG) cranes. -
6. What accessories are required for crane rail installation?
Key accessories for crane rail installation include rail clips, rail clamps, bolts, rubber pads, sole plates, and fishplates. These components secure the rail, absorb impact, allow for thermal expansion, and reduce wear.
